sunn 1000s wiring help
« on: March 07, 2011, 03:51:19 pm »
hey guys,
I'm new to the board and i just received my first sunn head in the mail today. The only issue is that one of the transformers got jacked up in shipping. here's some pics of the damage

I have a guy who's an experienced engineer on hand but he doesn't typically work on this kind of equipment. His problem is that he doesn't know what color wire corresponds to what. the only schematic i could find that was close was the one for the 2000s and it doesn't provide this info.  I don't really have much to spend at the moment so i'm trying to do this with the resources i have available at the time. thanks for any help!

Chris,
Can you give us the code numbers on the bell end of the transformer along with the colors of all the wires on the transformer?

the numbers appear in this order

28-2312
606007

the wire colors are
blue
blue with a white stripe
blue with a black stripe
black
and a green and yellow striped one

thanks for the reply

The info required is on the 2000S schematic. It looks like mostly the primary wires to the power transformer are damaged. If your "engineer" can't figure it out from the schematic, get somebody else. It's too dangerous for someone who doesn't know what they are doing. Get a three wire line cord installed and have the death cap removed.

the amp already has a 3 prong cable installed. I also obtained a 2000s schematic already but the only mention of wire colors does not include the ones connected to the transformer. The engineer is an in house one for a wireless audio technology company. He can definitely read a schematic but he's more used to working with modern circuitry hence his need for the labeling of all the wires coming from the transformer.

Working on cell phones or other wireless technology isn't the experience required to fix this amp. No one ever died repairing a cell phone.

i agree that working on cell phones is in no way death defying nor is it remotely similar to amp design. I was just trying to say that while he may not be an amp tech he is a competent engineer. I felt the quotations were a bit harsh, that's all. thanks for the cleaner schematic.

Chris,
Your transformer is a Shumacher. Look at the schematic that Loudthud sent. This is for a 2000S amp, but has the same power transformer as the 1000S. If I understand you correctly, the wires you mentioned are still attached to the transformer; namely, the blue, blue/white, blue/black and black are all primary wires. The green/yellow wire is the center-tap ground on the filaments (secondary). All of these match the 2000S schematic. It appears (from the photos) that the rest of the secondary wires are still connected. You should find the following: two yellow wires connected to pins 2 & 8 of the two rectifier tube sockets (5AR4/GZ34); two red wires connected to pins 4 & 6 of the rectifier tube sockets; a red/blue wire connected to a terminal strip (this is the negative bias feed); a red/yellow wire connected to ground (the chassis); and two green wires connected to another terminal strip (these are the filament wires). Take your amp to a local tube amp tech! High voltages are involved (read: can kill you) so you need someone familiar with vacuum tube technology. This should be an easy fix.

Good Luck!
Ryan

I didn't see any ground wire coming from the line cord, but the camera angle wasn't very good back there in the corner.

I did notice that there are no wires going to the Standby switch. The switch could have gone bad and the B+ wire just connected to pin 8 to one of the GZ34 sockets. Things like this need to be looked at with a trained eye.

It looks like the amp has been re-capped, another source of possible trouble. Lets see a shot of the complete chassis, use a flash or plenty of light if you can.

I really hope there is no damage inside the transformer. Verify that the correct fuse is installed before you power up the amp.
