Over on the Plexi Palace forums(
www.vintageamps.com)there was a discussion/poll as to everyone's favorite preamp tube and their sonic characteristics; however, owing to the vast variety of amps(and the way each one sounds differently), no hard conclusions were met(i.e. a JJ in a Fender will come across differently than in a Marshall, etc.). I recently snagged a '69 Sorado with OG tubes(RCA 6650's, unmarked 6an8, and a Mullard(!)pre, all are good, and after the obligatory cap replacement and a solid state rectifier plug, it's rocking' hard. But after reading the P.P. posts, it was pointed out that Mullard 12ax7's are a bit mid-rangy, and I wonder if I should put it in my '66 Vox AC30, where it would be more "at home". So, whatta youse guys like otherwise? What brand, new or old, would best serve the classic Sunn 60/120 watt platform; please describe the tonal differences, and any gain aspects, thanks.
