New Sunn 1200s
« on: October 07, 2001, 07:43:00 am »
Hi I notice alot of talk of the older Sunn equip.  I would like to know if anyone has exp. with the newer stuff.  Especially the new 1200s.  I would like all opinions on this product as I am thinking of purchasing it.  Or should I save more and get the 300t?

TIA

S

You should probably buy a Peavey.

Once again, seriously, the 1200S can no doubt be made into a real bass amp.  It all depends on what you like.

I own a 300T and I really like it.  I think the channel mixing and graphic EQ are BS, but I truly do like the split-band compressor.  If you like the mid notch, buy an Eden.

I would love to set a 1200S up for bass.  If done correctly, it should sound very much like a Hiwatt 200, but with the Sunn mojo.

The 300T weighs 75LB and is a bit of a pain to cart around.  Dunno what a 1200S head weighs.  60LB?  Who knows?

In my opinion, the 1200S conversion would sound better; there's not a thing wrong with the way a 300T sounds.  Your choice.  Rocketboy

My '70 1200s works just dandy for Bass.
Be aware that the new 1200s bass amp is a
transistor amp.

oops!  I thought you refered to an old tube 1200S.  The new hybrid 1200S bass head is real loud and clean.  But since it has solid-state finals, it can never sound like a tube Sunn.  The new 1200S eats Eden for a light breakfast.  If you're into the hybrid scooped-tone thing, the 1200S will work well for you.  It even growls.  Be advised that having a 12AX7 in the preamp architecture doesn't necessarily make an amp sound "TUBE".  The new 1200S is pretty serious stuff.  Whether or not you dig it is very much up your ears.  Again, sorry about the confusion.  Ric
