200S cap question
« on: February 02, 2002, 05:09:00 pm »
I want to rebias some new tubes (RCA 6550 matched pair) and change the capacitors on this amp. I'm interested in finding out the easiest way to bleed of charge on the caps. Any suggestions specific to this circuit would be appreciated. Also interested in  any information on the original suppliers of used by Sunn for these caps.

thanks,

george

Here is a doc you might find interesting:

I personally would discharge all the caps possible and then test them with a screwdriver to the chassis just to be safe.

see http://www.repairfaq.org/REPAIR/F_captest.html#CAPTEST_008 for a real good discussion on capacitor discharge.

I use a piece of wire with an insulated alligator clip on one end, a resistor in the middle and a short bare wire segment on the other with shrink wrap covering the connections.

clip the aligator to ground and touch the bare wire to the positive side of the cap. if you are real skittish use a wooden chop stick taped  near the bare wire end.

After its drained I put a volt meter across the leads for safety, and then I even put a ground jumper wire on the positive end for good measure, just don't forget to temove the jumper
I enjoy old Sunn stuff, tube and solid state, I have a Concert Bass, Concert slave, 1200s (4X6550, dual rectifier) Concert PA, Studio PA, and an old Acoustic 360 2X15 cab but with Sunn Speakers)

Rock On!!
