Sunn Solarus as a bass amp

I just got my hands on a Sunn Solarus combo tube amp.  It's in great condition but probably could use new tubes and filter capasitors.  Anyways, my question to all of you is this:  I play the electric bass guitar, and I was wondering if it is harmful to the amp to play a bass through it.  I have played my bass through it and it sounds fantastic, great solid tone.  Are there certain tubes that I could put in it to accomidate for a low end signal.  Any advice/suggestions would be great.  My bass guitar has an active pickup on it if that makes any difference.  Thanks a lot.

You can use it as a bass AMP - most Sunn amps are very much the same. Whether the SPEAKERS will survive in an open backed cab is another story entirely.

Hopefully some of the bass characters who inhabit the forum will reply. Wish I could offer you a good price - I had a '67 Solarus combo and loved it.

Amptender @ AOL.COM had a mint Sunn bass amp for sale on the West Coast. You might contact him if the Solarus will not work for loud gigs.

I used my old Sceptre (same head, different speakers) for bass many times. Bottom line: if you like the tone, and it's loud enough for the gigs you play, use it. Just make sure the Speakers you use can handle the low end.

Hey Jeremy .... I used to play guitar and bass in a 12 pc dance orchestra. I used the Solarus with 2 speaker cabinets. (four twelves).It had enough power to drive the group and always sounded great. Never blowed a speaker in 17 years. I still own it and other than replacing tubes, it has been a flawless performer.
