6GH8A to 7199 socket adapter
« on: December 26, 2013, 07:43:34 am »
I have a question about my 1968 Solarus 40 watt combo amp (EL34s).

The tubes are all 'original' except for two new EHX EL34's. I ordered a new JJ ECC82 for the V2 preamp and a JJ GZ34 rectifier to replace the RCA rectifier currently in the amp. I'm doing some research on which Preamp for V1 and which Power tubes might sound good with the Solarus (any advice here?) but my main curiosity is the 7199 phase inverter.

Everything I've read points out that the 7199 is getting harder and harder to find and thus more expensive. I did find a post that recommended the use of a 6GH8A tube into an adapter to fit into the 7199 socket. Has anyone heard good or bad things about these sockets?

Here's the ebay auction that I was referred to:

Would this adapter and a 6GH8A tube work in my Solarus fine or would it potentially cause any damage to the life of the amp or components?

Thanks for any information!

Hi Reeps. My preference for current production EL34's is the Shuguang EL34B STR. tubesandmore has them sporting the Ruby label.
As far as the 6GH8A to 7199 socket adapter I haven't used one yet but my reading indicates that it works fine. I'll be needing a couple eventually for one of my Ampegs too.
btw, that RCA GZ34 could be a relabeled Mullard and if it's working you can keep using it. Same with the preamp tubes although it's fun to try different ones and wise to have backups. I do like to start fresh with power tubes unless they are some prized vintage type (that would most likely end up in one of my guitar amps anyway)
