Help Identifying a Sunn 2x12 please!
« on: January 16, 2015, 09:14:08 am »
Hey All

Always loved Sunn amps and cabs.  Recorded a record through a Sunn 2x15 bass cab and have been trying to find one ever since!

This cab popped up on my local CL and and info you guys may have on it would be glorious!

Sunn 2x12 guitar cab:

Does this look legit?  The tolex doesn't look like the tolex I've seen on vintage Sunn cab.  Any thoughts on this?

That the Tolex didn't look right was my first thought, too. IIRC, by the time Sunn started using the red sun logo, cabinets had name plates on them, and this cabinet does not. Beyond that, all I can say is that it doesn't look like any Sunn cabinet I can recall.

The corners don't looks right along with that being the wrong type of tolex and the badge being from the wrong era.

I don't think Sunn ever used wood or sheet metal screws to hold speakers in place. All I've ever seen is T-nuts and machine screws.

Looks a bit like a clone of a 200S, but, as noted by others above, lots of "errors."  Speakers are Eminence from 1972.  If the price is right and it sounds good to you - well - you have to decide, but don't pay on the basis of it being a real Sunn.

Based on the speakers for scale, it would seem that the cab is close to the standard 40 X 24 X 15 Sunn dimensions. I though that it may have been a re-done Sunn cab, re-tolexed with a new baffle for the pair of 12's and a non correct badge, but the construction seems off and the fastener pattern is wrong.
I suspect it's a DIY.
