concert lead/slave help
« on: February 20, 2015, 04:34:28 am »
Gentle folk, I'm new here and I'm new to Sunn equipment in general too.
I purchased this month my first Sunn Amp, that being a concert lead (70's red knob version), now my question is two fold and as follows.

Firstly, I want to play LOUD, I'm a doom fan but primarily have my roots in Jazz inspired discordant punk. The tone I'm looking for is a harsh fuzz, really bassy and abrassive,  I've been reading about a lot of the bands whose tone i dig and have realised its a bunch of tube amps cranked up with low gain and boosted via effects. Now, theoretically would I be able to link say two tube amps to create the warmth and crackle i want, use them sort of like effects pedals and line them in to the loop of a concert lead?
maybe over kill for some but aesthetically and sonically it will please me

(probably on some level autistically too.

secondly, I also have a concert slave coming my way too.
now, i know people will probably say it's overkill but is the concert lead only able to link up to one concert slave or can you daisy chain say two or three concert slaves to create a wall of ear bleeding speaker thumping volume?

You could probably use a tube amp as an "effects pedal" if it is equipped with a line level/preamp out that you can plug into the effects loop or preamp input of your primary amp.
You can NOT use the power stage output of a tube amp into an effects loop; not for very long anyway, but if you DO decide to try it be sure to film it for Youtube.
Why not save the hassle and just use a tube amp by itself though?

You can run as many slaves as you want, just wire them from the line out jack of one into the line in jack of another.

I think there'd be an impedance issue if too many slaves were driven from one source, but I wouldn't expect that to be a problem with two slaves, or even three. Also, if one is looking for an ear-splitting wall of sludge, losing some of the highs due to impedance mismatch might be seen as an advantage, anyway.

j197b, I think you should explore the sounds your Concert Lead can give you. I think you might be pleasantly surprised. You might not need a tube amp at all.

Don't worry about SS vs. tube just yet. SS Sunn amps are very special and overdrive like tubes while having a precise yet not sterile response unlike most SS amps. For the sound you describe, a SS Sunn would be right up your alley. The EQ is very versatile, the distortion and boost get you into Marshall territory if you have a high impedance mismatch to reduce headroom and the reverb is on par with a Fender or better. Plus just about every Sunn, tube or SS is an excellent pedal platform but still has an awesome "baked in" tone that no other amp matches when you want enormous power but still being musical unlike a HiWatt for guitar, you dime that thing and you'll wish you hadn't, much like a Model T it's a borderline sterile clean machine.

Awesome, you guys have been a great help.
i might invest in a second concert slave as opposed to anything tube for the moment then!
