speakers
« on: September 10, 2015, 12:57:31 pm »
Hi - Just got a 1968 Sunn 200S amp.  Opened the cabinet and all I could see from the speakers was a huge square magnet, and someone had written Hammond / 8ohm on both speakers.   Anybody know what kind of speakers they are.  They sound like the originals from back in the day (I had a Sunn 2000 in 1969 and I still mourn selling it in 1978)  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Bill

Welcome to the forum!
The square magnet drivers are most probably CTS woofers. They were prolific in all kinds of applications in the 60's and the 70's, but...
NOT in the 200S or the 2000S amps. Both of those came with JBL D140F's as standard equipment.

I would guess that somewhere along the way someone replaced the JBL's with the CTS drivers, probably because they blew the JBL's. That wasn't real uncommon back in those days.

Here's another welcome.  Nothing wrong with the CTS speakers, but IMO, they pale in comparison to the JBL D140F's.  Sounds like you're liking it as is, so I'd rock it.

If you're interested in a brand and time frame on the speakers, look for a 5,6 maybe 7 digit number located on the rim of the frame.  Most speakers have this identification number.
