sunn 215b grill information needed
« on: September 10, 2002, 05:45:00 pm »
hi,

i've got a sunn 215b exactly like the one in the picture below.  i think the grill is non-original.  i'm thinking of making one that matches, as closely as possible, the original grill.  can anyone give me dimensions, type of grill cloth (the one in the picture looks more transparent), and how the grill was mounted to the cabinet (mine uses the plastic "velcro" - type material but in the picture it looks like screws were used). thank you.

Though I know more about the older Sunn stuff, I know that Sunn used a more open, black cloth in these later models. The earlier cloth was similar to Fender's black/white/silver cloth. I dont know exactly what this black cloth was, but you could probably find something very similar at music stores that sell "genaric" grille cloth. I'll check my catalogues from the major manufactures to see if I find something specific.
The '60s Sunn grilles were held in place by "stick & ball white nylon fasteners that fit together with a "snap". I don't know about the later '70s versions.

thanks tom,

i'm not too picky about getting everything period accurate so i guess i'll make do with the standard black grill cloth.  all the pictures i've seen of these late 70's 215b's look like they were held in place with four screws.  you can just barely make them out in the picture.

Yep, they do use 4 black Phillips head wood screws with black washers.

As far as the grille material goes, I think it is pretty similar to the see-thru black grille cloth used on small 80s Fender amps (like the Squier 15).  You might have more luck looking for a similar Fender or other brand cloth product (rather than strictly Sunn).  Also, the fabric appears and feels like plastic...not a hint of any softer fibers in there.

Good luck!
