sunn 190L head and cabinet question
« on: January 11, 2003, 11:40:41 pm »
hi everyone,

the sunn challenge continues.....I have a question that I need some help on.

just picked up a sunn 190L head and matching cabinet today...they are both super clean....neither of them work at this point, but the cabinet is a bit of a puzzle.....

the cabinet is 24" wide by 42" high and 15" deep. It has wheels and a side handle as well as 4 little bumper type feet on the side. But here is the strange part. It is a 3x12 cabinet that appears to have been fitted with a new baffle board that is recessed and has angled sides with all three speakers aligned vertically in the center recessed section......the three speakers that are in there are crap...in fact two are peavey (yuck) scorpions and one might be original sunn but it is toast......my concern lies with figuring out what this thing is/was supposed to be.

Is there such a thing as a Sunn 3x12 cabinet? the cabinet has two jacks on the back and is noted as being 6 ohms.....I want to clean it up and replace the baffle with something closer to what it is supposed to be.....I suspect it is a vertical 4x12 but i don't know enough about sunns offerings to be able to tell

any info would be appreciated
thanks!

Sunn 312S

Yes, Sunn did make a speaker cabinet with 3-12" speakers! It's a 312S, made in the early to mid 70's. I have one too (but with the original Sunn transducers)! It's a front-loaded horn (the v-baffle). So, don't hack-up your original Sunn cabinet!

hey ryan,
send me some pics if you have any, that'd be very helpful!!! the cabinet looks like someone has been in there, but maybe not.....if i see yours I'll be able to tell. the lettering on the metal I.D. tag on the back of the cabinet is scraped off, but all I can make out is 6ohms and 180? watts. also, was your 3x12 designed for guitar? I assume it was

rich,
thanks for the help as always!!!...I didn't see anything at your site...but one thing I can always count on is your two cents which is always worth much more than that!!!

thanks again

ok...it's an original sunn 312s

I spoke with someone who knows the stuff and it is a original horn loaded design.

as I said before the speakers that came with it were kinda sketchy (2 peavey widows and 1 sunn that needs a bit of help).  maybe I'll hunt down some sunn speakers one day, but for now i am gonna go with bergantino designed 16 ohm V-30 clones.

how do the horn loaded cabs sound? anybody? they sure look weird.

also, after a bit of tinkering and re-tubing the 190L head that came with it works great. I would love to get a schematic for this, but it doesn't appear that there are any around?

thanks
