My sunn & ampeg don't like each other
« on: April 06, 2003, 05:40:35 pm »
I have a 2000s that I've used for a number of years. I got a good deal on
ampeg's discontinued pr410 HLF cabinet. Both components seem to work
well with other gear but sound distorted when used together. This tends
to happen from low A on down. I'm running a G&L ASAT bass which
has a pretty hot signal.  Any help is appreciated.

My 2000S I just got doesn't sound all that great through my SVT cabinet. I used to have a 200S which sounded fabulous through the Sunn cabinet, so I'm on the lookout for one of those. I think the effeciency of the Sunn cabinet is a major factor.

effeciency?

This is a newer cabinet design from their pro series. It's a similar concept
to Hartke's 4200 cab. With today's R&D programs using cad design,
I don't think it's an effecincy problem. It's rated at 600W RMS @4 Ohms
and has a usable low frequency range better than anything this side
of an Eden cab.

your amp was made to work with speakers that had a power rating of 120
wrms@ 108db like old JBLd140,s ampegs are power hungry new 200
to 300wrms to stat working there rating is 300w@ 98db,low power amps
that are transparent in there sound generally don't sound good with modern speakers and cabs

a 200s will sound worse (a 2000s is the same circuit as a 200s just 2x
the power) the svt cab is very insensitive to low power and was designed
for a amp that had 300wrms and lots of coloration (iemuddy) the sunns
are very nutral in there sound and low powered with balls, another head that sounds good with the svt,s are the fender ps300 and ps400,keep
the sunns with jbl type speakers and you will be happy...Martin

The 200s and 2000s are NOT the same circuit... for one thing, the tone controls are a different combination.

I dunno. I've used this amp with nothing but newer speakers(mesa booge
hartke, and sonic) over a 6 year period and I've had really good results.
This is the first speaker I haven't been able to dial in a sweet sound with that amp.
If the 2000s were made today it would be advretised as a 200w amp.
It can hold its own against a swr sm 400 , Gk rb 400, or a hartke  5000
On second thought, it can kill and rb 400
