Hi All,
I recently fixed up my tired Sunn 215B cabinet -- including loading it with some nice new EV 15BX speakers. The originals are long gone but I did my research and the EVs are a pretty good match for the smallish Sunn cabinet and higher port tuning of the 215. I had to do some mods to get the new speaks to fit, email if you would like the details.
Anyway, I got to try it out at a practice tonight with my modest (some would say underpowered) Sonaro (one of the old ones with EL34s stock). It worked great! I run a Ric 4003 -> Tech21 Bass Compactor -> amp, generally. Much of the time I will go without the compressor depending on what I'm playing.
Well, I was impressed how the little amp and cab filled the room. I got a generally clean sound with a little bit of tooth and snarl around the edges. If I need more clean volume, I might need to use my Model T instead. I just wish the rig didn't weigh so much! A fellow from a local band showed up to watch and he was really impressed with the Sunn stuff. He told me about how he visited Tualatin in the 70s to pick up some Sunn gear for his band at the time. COOL! BTW, they still use a 190L, a Model T, and I believe he said a 6x12 too...
Hey, I'd love to hear your recent Sunn stories -- how have you fanatics been using your Sunn gear on gigs, etc?
Thanks much,
G
