connecting heads through the preamp
« on: July 09, 2003, 08:27:11 pm »
can this be done with a combination of 100 watt (or interchangeable but I would assume they would all need to be at the same wattage) heads or can it only be done through the Model Ts, or other amps with the preamp in/outs? I've tried the combination once but I dont think it was working out right. I dont have my equpiment here anymore so I can't fiddle around.
And how would this chain be organized? Which amp do I plug into and which one plugs into the cabs (or do they all need to be plugged into a cab)
many questions. answers appreciated
Im fooling around with mixing vintage sunn heads with the moden FMIC models. Interesting (and excellent) tones when using an A/B and seperate cabs. But I would like to know if there is more than just boosting the volume by combining heads

well, you can daisy chain 2 heads by plugging your instrument into the input, then connect the direct output (situated just under the model t's input) with the other head's input, so your guitar is directly connected with two amps, and you can benefit from both preamps, each with different settings of the tone controls, so you will get a broader sound. Or you are satisfied with the sound of one amp, but need more volume and connect the preamp output of the head that's connected to your instrument with the power amp input of the other head, never go from the preamp out to an instrument input, you can blow up your preamp! have fun, cheerio, guy

Why would this be true?  I've been playing a Concert Lead running 2 4x12s connected to a Concert Controller PA head running a 2x15 this past week at MONSTER volumes with no trouble at all using this method.  I tried every other combination I could with these two heads and this was the only one that seemed to provide full power and adjustable tone with both heads.  Note that the PA head doesn't have the bells and whistles a guitar head has but the aux out jack doesn't seem to work with the Concert Lead (although it has with my Ampeg V4 in the past for whatever reason) so I've resorted to using the instrument input.  Any more info?  I don't actually WANT to blow up my guitar rig (usually).

Thanks,
Ryan

I only said, you CAN blow it up, if i do that with my Guild thunderbass (80 or so tube watts, thundering bass sound indeed, i would dare to say more thundering than a 200s, try it) into any other amp, i will blow that amp as it has happened once, I have to connect it to a power amp input for more volume, cheerio, guy

so the preamp out from lets say an FMIC Model T, into a solid state concert lead instrument input is relatively safe and is capable of broader tones?
Also, now I know what to use the front panel outputs on the original Ts for. Thank you thank you. I've been so ignorant
