SUNN Solarus- Today!!!!!
« on: February 24, 2001, 01:14:00 am »
Hello, my name is Ronny Lee, and I'm an ampoholic.
Just got a SUNN Solarus today!!!!! My first SUNN since '69-'70 when I had two 200S's,(one was a double cab). I played bass at that time.
Can anyone tell me how to find the date of it? And a schematic?
The tubes are RCA 6552's. Are they the correct tubes?
I don't know what all it may need, but it sounded GREAT when I tried it out thru a 412 cab today. Awesome tone!
Anyway, any help will very much appreciated.
Thanks~~~~~~~

Ronny;
Schematics for your amp are available on this website. Scroll down the opening page and click on "Schematics" to find your amp. The output tubes should be EL34's, not "6552's" (you really mean 6550's here). I've seen Sunn amps mis-labelled as to the correct output tubes. The way to tell which your amp takes is to look at the power and output transformers. If the trannies are large (the size of a big grapefruit and barely clear the top of the cabinet) the amp takes the 6550's. If the trannies are small (about the size of a softball) then the amps takes EL34's. Double check by comparing the output tube wiring on the schematic with your amp.
You can date it by checking the date code on the pots....the first 3 digits are the manufacturers code. The next four digits indicate the year (first 2 digits) and the week (next 2 digits).

Good Luck!

Hey Ryan,
Thanks for the info. I found the schematic after I posted.
And I got another one by e-mail.(This one shows 6550's).
The trannies are the huge ones. The tubes in it now say RCA 6552. I guess that must mean 6550.
I'm reluctant to go into the amp to look at the pots. I'll be taking it to my tech soon for a complete check up, so I'll check them then.
Is there anything in particular that he should look for? Should the 100K resistors be replaced?
Thanks again for your help,
