Lowest bottom-end solid-state amp
« on: December 13, 2003, 07:21:15 am »
I was wondering what solid-state Sunn amp has the lowest bottom-end. I'm still orientating myself on what kind of amp to buy. I play a Gibson LP Custom and looking for a 'warm/thick/full/low/heavy' sound.

annum,

i particularly like my red logo concert lead. 200 watts and lots of grunt at the bottom and wide range tone controls.

the beta series uses mosfet outputs and emulates the warmth of a tube amp. that series is 100 watts.

the question you ask is largely subjective. what i like may sound like trash to you.

best regards, tube

hi, I have the beta, concert, coliseum bass and coliseum 300 models of sunn, so one could say I have the opportunity to compare. IMHO I would say the combination of your gibson LP with a big muff on a coliseum 300 is definitely the heaviest and thickest one, especially when you use .12 or .13 strings and tune them down, to D or even B! even a clean guitar on a coliseum 300 sounds extremely full and warm, but very clean when you do not use a stomp box. I do think they look butt ugly though!
cheers, guy

Ok, thanks, I'll definitively keep the Coliseum 300 in mind. By the way my guitar is now downtuned to dropped C and I use .11 strings. I don't know if anyone is familair with the sound of bands like Sons of OTIS / OX / SUNN 0))). Then you get an idea of the sound I like.

Reactions from other members are very welcome.

So the Sunn Coliseum 300 would be the best Sunn solid-state amp to produce the lowest bottom-end. The cabinet however is just as, or even more important, than the head if it comes to bottom-end. The way the speaker cab resonates and moves air will determine how much bottom-end you're going to hear and feel.

So which Sunn cab would 'fit' the head, in order to produce low, warm and heavy drones? (212, 412, 215, 118, ...)

hello annum,
I run my J. Nunis LP/PRS hybrid guitar through a 200s head (early Portland run) and a 215 cab on one side and an Ampeg b5r through a Hartke 4.5xl (a 4x10 with a tweeter) on the other side. The head has an octaver in it which is quite useful for the drones, and as an added benefit, I can play my G&L 2000 through the same setup for a killer sound, too. The dronest, lowest, growliest amp I've ever tried though, was a SUNN Coliseum 880 with it's compliment of a 415 and a 218. Good luck! Anybody used the 300T for guitar?

for that sunn 0)))/ sons of otis doom sound try a tube sunn, the model t does the job very well, but even extremer is a coliseum p.a. of which all four inputs (i.e. 4 preamps) are connected at the same time with your guitar and put to 10, it's the most doomy and growling sound I ever heard, kinda like that Unida album, very aggressive! enjoy, guy

P-Bass through my Coliseum 300 and 215BH cabinet shakes the house with tone you can feel.  Cabinet has the deepest, mellowist sound you wouldn't believe, but a tad unwieldly to transport.
