Older Sunn cap cans
« on: February 15, 2001, 12:04:00 am »
I have seen a few older tube Sunn heads roll through here of late with the dreaded, but expected dead power caps. As most tech heads know, these caps are in the 'can' format and they are hard to find in the four value configuration.

It is a bit of a pain, but do-able to solder in terminal strips and lay in some axial lead caps, but I want to let folks know that the good people at Antique Radio Supply has purchased the old cap can machines and plans to start making them for us again. Their expected release date will be sometime in May 2001.

I have tried replacing these caps using both methods and find that I would rather chew tin foil. But its a living...

that's great news on the multi-cap cans from AES

in the mean time check out AG Tannenbaum's collection on NOS multi-caps at

http://www.agtannenbaum.com/alcan.html

NOS caps are a bit of a gamble, but  I have bought a dozen or so of their caps and have had everyone be perfect so far. Your mileage may vary. Reasonable prices too.

They can still be reached the old fashioned way:

Hi:
Boy - thats good news. I had to fix my Sceptre the hard way. I measured the voltage at the primary cap and it was 560v. The original cap was rated at 450v so even when new it was operating in it's safety margin. I located some military surplus 600v caps and installed them on strips.
