Can I run a line out of each speaker out simultaneously?????
« on: January 23, 2004, 02:01:36 pm »
AMp: Sunn Sorado (60w Bass Head).
There are 2 speaker outputs on the back. One 8ohm and One 4ohm. Can I hook a seperate speaker cabinet up to each output at the same time, without hurting the amp?
Thanks

tube output sections are much more forgiving when it comes to overly low impedance loads. However, i wouldnt suggest doing that. What will be happening is, you will be running two loads on different taps of the transformer, and it could cause the OT to overheat.

If you need to run two speaker loads, your best bet is to run them off of one transformer tap. just calculate the combined speaker load, choose the closest matching tap without going over, and then daisy chain the cabinets in parallel.

for example.. if you have one 8 ohm cabinet and one 4 ohm cabinet, your combined speaker load is roughly 6 ohms. if there isnt a 6 ohm output on your amp, use the next SMALLER one.. the 4ohm.

Thanks Joe,
you clarified what i was after. looking at my question again it is pretty misleading.
All i wanted to know was if i was running a 4ohm cabinet out of the 4ohm output did I need to also run an 8 ohm load out of the 8ohm out.

WHY i was thinking this, I have no idea.

So to sum up, two 8ohm speakers run parallel (4ohms) would hook up to the 4ohm output and thats the end of story.

By the way nice A212 on the atomicpilot site!

No problem. Glad i could help :)
you got it right. im glad you caught that i was talking about wiring in parallel. i dont think iwas clear on that.

thanks for the compliment on my A212.  :D  She loves ya for it.

Actually, if you check the Sunn schematics, you'll find that most, perhaps all, of the amps of that vintage have a switched jack, such that, if you plug into the 4 ohm jack, the 8 ohm jack is also connected to the 4 ohm tap. I haven't checked the schematic for this particular amp, but I think it will be the same.
