what is the best sunn solid state bass amp?
« on: March 26, 2004, 03:07:49 am »
i am in two bands in which i play bass.   my main band is a punk/hardcore/stoner metal band and the other is an experimetnal/doom/drone band.  i love low end bass sound.  and i love to use distortion half of the time.  i need to get a new bass amp, and i am on a tight budget and therefore and only afford a solid state bass amp.  i heard that the Coliseum 300 was the best solid state sunn bass amp, but i have heard that the Coliseum 880 is good too.   how many watts are each of these or any of your suggestions?  i can't afford to screw around with crap, i need the best of the best.  thank you.

They are both rated at 300 watts at 2ohms. The 880 has a peak output of 800 + You may want to get a coliseum 300 for a number of reasons. 1st - To find an 880 in good shape for cheap will not be done if you are on a tight budget. 2nd - You can get a 300 for a reasonable price in very good shape and the preamp and bi-amp capabilities are much more versatile than the 880. If you end up with a 300 and want the power you have to get it down to the 2 ohm load. You will dim the lights on the house circut when you crank this thing up and play on a 2-ohm load.

A Sunn Orion sounds amazing for bass, but I imagine it would be hard to find one.  I can attest that the Coliseum series does sound awesome from years of listening to one of my favorite bassists using one.  (Dixie Collins from Buzzov-en & Weedeater.)  His tone would probably be close to what you would be looking for.
