Model T knob color?
« on: May 06, 2004, 12:11:56 pm »
Anybody know the difference between the red knobbed Model Ts and the silver/white knobbed ones? I am assuming they switched over at a certain model year (I am guessing late 70s) but I am not sure. Does the knob color signify any other difference?

The red knob centers coincided with the red Sunn logo (silver letters w/ red sun and "shock waves"). This came around the Hartzell period. They also started painting the speaker baffles and horns white. (pretty ungly in my opinion) * It reminds me of CBS's decision to change the look of Fender amps - which helped all of us know which amps to stay away from!

I have a red face Model T without the mid-switch. I am especially curious because mine is from 1978, and I thought all model Ts after about 76 had the switch.

Red knobs came about in 75-76 when Hartzell sold the company.  Mid switches were slightly before that.  Some of the circuitry is different and results in different tone from the originals.  Many prefer the tone of the originals (personal preference) and somebody here (I think Joe Arthur) has a copy of an article to mod the later T's.
