Hello:
Dang, you have reminded me of a project I was going to undertake. I think I can still access the serial number logbook and post the numbers to this site. I have been meaning to do this for a year or so but it's such a large job.

Can't help you now though.

Would you be able to point me in the direction of said reference guide?....
I'm pretty frustrated. I think it could be a 1973...?

Hello:
The VP of manufacturing for Sunn moved to New Mexico last year and he was in posession of it. Geting it scanned and on the net is the work part. Him still having it is the other part.

Date of Manufactuer
« Reply #7 on: June 20, 2004, 10:06:02 pm »
Most of the Sunn equipment I have encountered has a label somewhere on the chassis that gives the date of manufacture/ Take the chassis out and look for it. On the tube amps, it was usually on the under side.

We also used to take the name plate off the cabinet and top and wrote the serial number there with an electric pencil. On some of them, we put our store label and a date of sale.

Serial number stickers
« Reply #9 on: June 21, 2004, 03:13:23 pm »
The serial number stickers were probably stopped when Fender sucked up Sunn. If you have a "Real Sunn" product and the sticker is gone, it probably fell off. I think they were just the lick 'em and stick 'em kind.

Maybe if you post your number, others who have amps that they know the year of mfg. could tell you if yours was before or after their date. Just an idea.

I agree with pennierich.  What we can do is start a serial number database of our own that contains:

Serial #, Model (#) and Year

Does Sunn speaker cabinets have serial numbers too or is it just he heads and combo's?

The "Real Sunn" cabinets had serial numbers. I don't know about the later cabinets.

The problem with the serial numbers on the cabinets mfg. in the 70's is, the stick on number tag is liable to come off.  Mine did while I had it in storage. I am currently moving everything in my storage room to find it.

I can't remember if the silver front Sunn cabinets from the early days had the stick on label or embossed numbers. Maybe someone who has one of the older cabinets can enlighten me.

Hello:
During my tenure at Sunn, serial numbers were assigned in sequence when the work order was entered. So, it's possible to have two different products end up with sequential numbers (ie: the last of one run and the first of another). All SPL speaker cabinets and drivers had serial numbers. Other cabinets had serial numbers but the drivers did not. All serial numbers were hand written in a single spiral notebook that went all the way back to the 60's. This book was kept in the warrentee / repair department. I saw it once right after the Fender buyout in the posession of the Fender controller. Never since.
