Sonic II Head and Cab
« on: June 28, 2004, 11:48:18 pm »
Hey guys.  I am very new to the Sunn World so I have a few questions.  BTW, this is my first post and I look forward to getting to know here.

I was looking at a local amp and have some questions. It's a Sunn Sonic II head and cab. The ONLY info I can find on it says the following:

1.) Only made for about year (1966-67)
2.) Head is basically identical to a 200S with
JBL speakers
3.) Tubes are 12ax7, 6AN8, GZ34, KT88
4.) Cab holds two 15" JBL D-130Fs
5.) 250 watts "program power" (whatever that
means); also says 60 watts

Anyone heard one of these? I'm thinking that if the price is right the JBL speakers alone are worth some decent coin. Also, what brand of KT88s would have shipped with these? Would they be worth anything?

The head and cab have been sitting for a long time in a local shop so he may dicker (he may also have an insane price on it). ANY idea what this thing is worth?

Thanks
Steve

I have no idea what brand of KT88's this shipped with. It's pretty much irrelevant anyway....just buy some new tubes (Svetlana, EH or NOS tubes if you can afford them) and have the amp re-biased. If the amp is original, and the speaker cab is loaded with two JBL D-130's (that's a guitar speaker, not bass speaker) and it's all in clean shape, I say it's worth $400 to $500 retail easily. My undated Sunn catalog that shows the Sonic II appears to be from about 1967 as all the amps still have the 1st series grille cloth that was changed in 1967 to the square pattern. Collectors are finally getting hip to early Sunn amps, so they are becoming a better investment as well as just great amps period! If I were you I'd snag this amp before someone else finds it (or tell me where this amp is and I'll buy it!)
Good Luck!
