Cab for a Concert Bass head
« on: August 04, 2004, 12:40:46 pm »
does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of cab to pair up with my concert bass.  I have been looking at the Hartke VX410 and the 215, a Eden MAG410, and an Avatar 212.

Im looking to get sound like Led Zeppelin, Cream, or even some of the newer thrash-funk stuff.  Lots of lows and very warm sound, not harsh.

That would be the ideal. If that's not practical, I'd go with the 2x15 cabinet. That should get you closer than tens or twelves.

please never even consider buying hartke anything...

also, 15 inch speakers are heavy and not that great if its the only thing you use....

i would suggest an ampeg 8x10 or 6x10 cab... they sound nice and are good all types of stuff.

I have found that a pair of Eden XLT 2 x 10 cabinets is a nice match for the concert bass head and my 62 precision bass.Easy to carry and a low frequency better than most single 4x 10 cabinets.

I used mine with an older ampeg 8x10E this past Saturday and I wish hadn't lugged along my SVT2(non pro). Maybe I am crazy but it sounded so much better than the SVT. My singer/rythm guitar player wanted me to play through the concert for the whole three hour practice!

Why exactly would you say these things? Please, be specific and enlighten us  bass gear neophytes!

I suppose you also recommend hiring roadies? Hey, guess why Ampeg 810's are sometimes refered to by pro sound people as "refrigerator cabs".

Not really directed at me but "the fridge" has such an awesome tight and focused sound. It seemed to bring out the best in my concert bass and coliseum 880. My sunn 2000s sounds much nicer with my older sunn 2x15. More open and booming. I think it just depends on what sound your going for. If you don't mind the workout the 8x10 sounds pretty darn good with a concert bass. I like to use my sansamp para driver with it for more tonal flexibility but the natural sound is just fine too! :)

An Ampeg 810 sounds great. It doesn't sound like a 2X15 cab. Is it better sounding than a 2X15 cab? Does it sound better than a 2X10 with a 1X15, or a 4X10 with a 2X15, or a 18"?
For that matter, which speaker sounds "better" JBL, EV, Altec, CTS, Eminence?
The 70's era SVT w/ a matching 810 bottom is arguably the best bass rig ever made, and a lot of very knowledgable people don't think there is any argument! The same argument can be made for Sunn, Hiwatt, Reeves, Marshall, etc.

DIFFERENT yes, but better......I would say "better is in the ear of the beholder"

I still want to know why you should never even consider buying hartke anything...

If you'll notice I am not the one who said not to buy anything Hartke. If Hartke gives you the sound your going for then by all means. The sunn stuff does get in your blood though. My SVT2 is a mean amp but it doesn't give me the "sound" I'll keep tweaking it. I loved the 8x10 right away though. If you can afford it then experiment your ears off!  :D

Hey sunnfever, I was actually refering back to this quote;

Posted by, and my comment directed to, joeyjoejoe.
And, I just am curious about the rationale behind the comment.
Does joeyjoejoe have actual experience with Hartke, or is joeyjoejoe just parroting something he read/heard, or did joeyjoejoe lose money on samson stock, or was joeyjoejoe frightened by an aluminum cone as a baby? You know, things like that.

Didn't mean anything by it. I am new to this forum and admit I don't have great forum skills. Or bass skills for that matter. Just giving original poster my two bits. I don't hold much stock in them myself.(hehe) The suggestion about the home built cab I was serious about though. It was a great experience, came out awesome, and let me know and appreciate my fathers woodworking skills even though he does not play music. If anyone is interested I could post pics and specs. I put a single sunn 15" magna 158 speaker in it. Goodtimes!
