folded horn cabs
« on: January 09, 2001, 12:41:00 am »
I've seen the Sunn 115RH and the 215RH cabs from the 70's (or early 80's) in
a bass gear store in Seattle, and I also know about Conrad Sundholm's 2x15 200s cabinet design, with a big port in the middle. I was wondering if Sunn made any 70's or 80's folded horn designs BESIDES these. Did they make any front or rear-loaded W-bins, like the Acoustic 360 or 301 models? If so, what are the model names, and how much do they go for? I'm thinking about running a 70's Coliseum 880 or 300 into a folded horn of some type.

Yes, Sunn made a folded horn 18 called a VH-118 I believe, that used a Cerwin-Vega cast frame 18" speaker.

I used to own a Sunn 215SH. It was a 2:15" folded horn and I purchased it in 1975-76. Painted black inside and manufactured without a grill cloth or any cover. I have never seen one since and I am looking for photos if anyone comes across one.

Here it is. I bought this cabinet about 20 years ago. I love it. It THUMPS! I only found this site about 3 days ago. I did a Google search on Sunn 215SH, and found that my 215SH has already made quite a name for itself! Any info that anyone can provide on it would be immensely appreciated. No, I'm no interested in selling!  :-D

I use my Sunn in conjunction with my all-original (6 each 6146b power tubes) 1969 Ampeg SVT "Blue line" / 2 B25B cab rig! I biamp thru my BOSS BE5-B. The Sunn and one B25B output the signal made by my SVT, and the other B25B thru a Canadian-built VT (Vibration Technology) VR140 "Guitar Equalizer". 140 watts of solid-state. Here's the link to my rig:

I'm also looking into picking up a 117-watt Coliseum Slave.

Does anybody know how Sunn serial#s work? I'd like to try and nail down a year on my Coliseum Slave.

I have a 215SH and a 118BH.  They both sound great though I like the 18's sound a little better.

Note my 215SH does not have the crossbrace in the middle like the one pictured earlier.
Sunn since June 1971!

Hi CLD,
How do you like your Concert bass into the 118VH? Prolly sounds like a mini Acoustic 370! The output transistors on the Concert are 2N3055 just like the Acoustic 370. Lucky for me I have both. Got a 118VH coming and like the set you have. The original 118VH 18" was the same part number as the Acoustic 301 "W" bin, got 2 and have actually played the concert into 1. Very Nice. ya got great taste in gear Mister.
Peace and happiness to you all.
