Heads up on vintage Sunn FS

If any of you have deep pockets and a touch of the "just gotta have it" fever, there's a guy named Joe Cenzori who listed an ad on Harmony Central a couple of days ago in which he was selling a 2000s head and matching cab with the JBL d140's for $1100, and a 1200s head with two 200s cabs(d140's)for $1500. His email is: ampy2000@earthlink.net  The prices seem a wee bit high, doncha think?(In fact, I'd be interested to see a consensus on what reasonable prices would be on good to excellent condition pieces of Sunn gear...unless ya think that might spoil the chance of finding a 200s for $50, or 2000s for $150 in some out of the way pawn shop or music store(believe me---it's happened!) Anybody got a great story on finding that Sunn amp(that you drooled over as a kid) for peanuts in some  Mom & Pop place?

Ok here is one. 1-1/2 years ago at the Greater Seattle Vintage Guitar Show another dealer approached my booth because I had a bunch of Sunn gear (of which I sold nada) and asked if I would be interested in purchasing an old Sunn tube head. "Sure, bring it over" I said. So he brings over a 1966 Sunn "Smiley Face" head.....it's all there except no badge, no tubes and un-tested. He said he picked it up at an estate sale. Of course I remembered that in high school one of the "rich kids" had one of these, when the rest of us were playing our Silvertones! Worst case scenario...a blown power or output transformer. Otherwise, it could be easily fixed since it's just a Dynaco Mark III inside a box (essentially). He was asking $150, so I offered $125, explaining that, since it hadn't been tested, it was a gamble on my part (if a trannie was blown) and could cost double that to buy a new trannie or re-wind the old one. He said that was fair and we made the deal. Turns out the trannies were fine. I replaced the main filter caps, the negative bias caps, the heater caps (the heater supply is DC just like and old Dynaco PAS preamp!) and installed new tubes, including Sovtek KT88's power tubes. This thing is so LOUD and has so much BOTTOM end I can't believe it! No wonder Sunn bass amps made such an impact when the only thing close them was a Fender Bassman or Showman. Anyway, it's one of my favorite Sunn amps.....amazing deals do still happen! Oh, if any of you have a "Smiley Face" badge to sell......well, name your price!

I was lucky enough to get a 2000s head from no other than Rich Briere for $300. Also I found a complete Sorado rig for $300 as well. It was sitting in a closet for the last 15 years and the guy's wife, well you know how it goes! The Sorado looks like a 200s but has Sunn Transducers instead of JBLs and the cab isn't horn loaded, just ported. Still looks cool! Yeah, I spoke to Joe, and would love a 2000s cab to complete my rig, but he won't split 'em up and the shipping(quoted $260) plus the $1100 was a little salty!

I am so happy...I just finished my Sunn rig.  A 1968 200S head and a matching 2X15 cab.  The cab is loaded with two K-140 JBLs.  I got the head for $125 two years ago at Guitar Gallery in NH and I just bought the cab at Daddy's for $175.

The head and the cab only needed a cleaning.

They sound and look soooooo nice.

Very happy,

Rick
