Troubleshooting a Sunn Solos II
« on: January 11, 2006, 09:21:14 am »
Hi
The other guitarist in my band recently bought a Sunn Solos II. He's using it with a Fender J5 Telecaster through a Dunlop Fuzz Face, and it sounds great except for one thing. We can't play very loud in the rehearsal room. With the volume at more than around half of the amps maximum, the tone dies completely. I don't know what you call it technically but I think the symptom is quite common. It kind of sounds like running the tone through a meat grinder or something. All texture and quality just disappears and you're left with a muddy, crackling sort of sound.
My personal guess, although I'm not (yet  ) a very experienced amp tech, would be that there's something wrong in the power amp which limits it from going up too high, but that's about as specific as I can get, other than that it's probably a burned cap or a worked-out transistor. Just going through and testing components feels a bit like a wild goose chase, especially since there doesn't seem to be any schematics available for this amp...
Does anyone have a clue as to how I might solve this?
Regards,
Christian
