please recommend good 12" bass speakers
« on: June 10, 2006, 10:49:52 pm »
i've got a couple empty sunn 412's that i want to use for bass. I've looked online at the eminence S2012's and the Celestion BL12-100's. Does anyone have any suggestions?

we tune to c-g-c-f, so it's gotta be able to handle the low lows, but i also use a healthy amount of midrange a la unsane, breach, jesus lizard, entombed etc.

Just found your question. Dunno if you have it sorted already, but I HIGHLY recommend Eminence Delta Pro spekares. They are fantastic. I have built three 4x12 cabs for bass use and it sonds earthshattering.

The Delta Pro 12" looks like a midrange driver to me. Fs=51Hz. The "low lows" will be hugely rolled off in most applications. That doesn't mean it won't work well, though. Most bass cabinets roll off the lows. In fact, the most common 10" driver for bass cabinets is also a midrange driver. Truth is, most people don't really know what low bass sounds like. When they hear it, they say it sounds muddy.

I have read somewhere that when several speakers are placed in close proximity with each other, as in the case of an Ampeg 8X10, the usable lowest frequencies go down by 10 or 20 Hz for every two speakers. If this is true, a 8X10 with midrange speakers usually best at 70 to 90 HZ, will, in combination, be best at 30Hz or less. Anyone know anything about this?

If true also, a good midrange 12” in a 4X12, even at 50Fs, should sound great and give you plenty of lows.

I would recommend a Altec or JBL industrial (theater) woofer. I have a…I think…a 3126 Altec, a wonderful speaker.  Wish I had another to make a smallish 2X12. They are not too expensive, around $60 to $90 many times. Dang....guess I'll have to buy it and build it. That means some kind of Sunn grill cloth too...oh noooo...I have found a website that is filled with people like me....and they have all this cool stuff! I want more.

Shepherd777m, can you post any photos of your 4x12s? I'd love to see what they look like.

I have Eminence Delta Pro Bass 12's in my 6x12 cabinet and it really pounds. The sound is heavy and thick and detunes well with my coliseum bass head. It's doesn't really get into the subs, so I am adding a 2x15 cabinet for a bottom.
