distortion pedals with a concert lead?
« on: June 12, 2006, 01:44:11 pm »
Hey,
What's a good distortion pedal to use with a concert lead head?  Just looking for some suggestions.

Thanks,
Ben

I'd really like one that punches through the clean rather than ones that seem like they play at lower volumes than the clean.

This may be of no use, but i currently use an MXR Distortion + with a Concert BASS (not the same , i know) but it acts as a volume boost and the distortion really cuts through.  another pedal i've used before was the ProCo Turbo Rat, which also gave me a boost in volume.

also, have you tried using the footswitch for distort/boost on the concert lead?  i got a fender two-button footswitch w/ rca inputs for my concert bass, and the increase in volume and fuzz blew me away.  before using the footswitch i was turned all the way up and could barely compete with the rest of the band, but after i could turn down to 6 or 7.

When I was using a Concert Lead, my Vintage Rat worked wonders.  I opted for a lower-gain, more overdriven sound and it gave me some brutal sustain and feedback.

-- i like the black big muffs. the turbo rat sounds cool too, but not quite enough gain for me

This is a nice place to look.
http://www.stompboxes.co.uk/score.html

They are boutique fuzz boxes based on/and fixing problems of old 60's and 70's fuzz boxes. I currently have the Meathead, huge volume bust, tons of gain and sustain with a rich low end. Awesome pedal.

If I was going to go for a rat, I would go for a Keeley modded Rat II, or for a Big Muff, one of the russian black ones modded to true bypass (terrible tone suck).

About $160 usually, I thought it was pretty expensive, and it was a major gamble for buying one without trying it, but once I got it, it was well worth it.

I'd either go with a RAT or a Big Muff plus an EQ pedal and a volume pedal...
