Sunn A212 Speakers
« on: July 29, 2006, 09:38:26 am »
Can anyone tell me what brand and model speakers were shipped with my Sunn A212 combo amp?

I have what appears to be some inexpensive Eminence speakers in there now, but I'd like them to be the original speakers.

As for mounting them the replacement speakers, I hope to do a better job than the mismatched, poorly aligned wood screws someone has used.  Why don't manufacturers use machine screws and T-nuts?  Is this a common practice at all?

Thanks - I have a real gem of an amp hear.

I think Sunn usually used t-nuts...they were probably the most thorough builders ever!  Post a picture and someone will probably recognize the speakers.

I've just been told the speakers presently installed are CTS, probably dating back to the '60's.  I think CTS are out of production, correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd like to replace these inexpensive speakers with as close to the factory original as I can.  But there are hundreds of speakers out there!

Different magnets, different wattages, vintage sounding, Jensen-sounding, etc, etc.  Very confusing.

I'm not really into speaker distortion, or a "Marshall" sound, or a "British" sound.  I just want it to sound GOOD.

This is a great amp, and I don't want to mess with it.    This isn't a Vox AC30, so why try to make it sound like that?

I just like a LOUD, clean, natural sounding amp.  Not brittle, bright, harsh, muddy, etc.

How about Weber speakers?  Or Jensen?

Were these amps shipped with JBL speakers?  But JBL no longer makes guitar speakers, is that it?

Any suggestions for a good, general-purpose replacement speaker for my Sunn A212?

Thanks

hello Dinsdale.
I'm sorry, I don't know what the original speakers were.
But I agree with you as far as loud and clear, i.e. no speaker distortion.
I would suggest some high wattage speakers
I love my jcm 800 when I run it into 100W speakers, day and night verses 75w.
tight, well defined boom vs. that plain old classic metal sound.
You might want to try and run your output into a bunch of different cabinets at the shop till you find what you like, the speakers probably will not sound exactly the same when you put 'em in your cabinet but they should be close.
I'm not the one you're thinking of.

Thanks, everyone.

It's a toss up between Weber California (ceramic magnet) or Jensen C12N from Musician's Friend.
