i got jjkt88's in my '74 model t, tried 6550's. anyone try el34's in their head? are they compatable? what type of tone did it give you compared to the other tubes? thanks.

I've got them in my '73 model t...they sound pretty good but I liked 6550's better.  I need some cash before I can get another set though.  The el34's are worht the try though.

So just to clarify, you just plugged EL34's into an circuit designed for 6550/KT88's? Any other modifications?

I think what EdBass is trying to get at is that the EL34 has it's suppressor grid on a separate pin, where the 6550 doesn't.  The 6550 (like a 6L6, 6V6, etc) has the suppressor connection internal to the tube to the cathode.

Normally a 6550 amp has to have pin 1 (suppressor) connected to pin 8 (cathode) on the socket for proper pentode operation of an EL34 - not just have the bias reset.
