Need Help with SUNN alpha 210r Amp!!
« on: December 12, 2006, 08:44:05 pm »
Hi,

My son has a SUNN Amp Model# alpha 210r. I was wondering if anyone knows where to find an owners manual for this thing. Also the speakers are pretty much "toast". Where would I go to get new speakers for this amp. It sounds really good, or at least it did. The paper cones are starting to come apart/torn, so it's now just about useless. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gord

Gord,

Getting new speakers depends on if you want to get replacements that are Sunn speakers or not.  If you want Sunns, browse the "classifieds" section of the forum and eBay, or post that you're looking for some in that section.  If you don't mind putting non-sunn speakers in, you could go to any music shop and get a pair of speakers, as long as they're the right size and power rating you're fine.

Unfortunately, there's no manual up on this site, but one of the forum members may have one that they can scan and email you.

What about impedence? You have a 50 watt @ 8 ohm amp, a pair of 8 ohms in series will put a serious load on that little amp. Also, you might want to try for GUITAR speakers. If you buy subwoofers, a pair of hi-fi woofers, or some car stereo garbage you might not be so "fine".
Advice is great and we can all benefit from it, but you should know what you're talking about before you give it.
Somebody new to this forum might take you seriously.

Sorry for the vagueness Ed.

gvan62, Ed can give you what you need if you have questions as far as what ohms are correct for that amp.

Looks like 8 ohm total load for 50 watts;

Probably two 4 ohm 10" speakers in parallel. Guitar speakers rated for at least 25 watts each.

Two Sunn 4 ohm speakers in parallel? Didn't someone recently say something about advice?

gvan62, EdBass got it backwards. Two 4 ohm drivers in series, or two 16 ohm drivers in parallel.

Guys,

I just want to replace the speakers using the original wire connectors. How the heck would I know if it is wired in series or parallel? I think I will go with a pair of 4 Ohm 10 inch speakers. Jensen makes an affordable model rated at 50 Watts RMS (MOD 10-50-4). I will also go to the local "Guitar Center", and ask a few questions.

Thanks for all the input!!!!!

Gord

Hi,

For anyone who is interested, the original speakers in this amp were 16 ohm and wired in parallel. We have actually opted to get the speakers rebuilt to most closely maintain the original specs. We happened to find an extremely reputable shop for this right in our home town. The shop owner was able to get replacement cones exactly the same as the originals, so it should go well. I will let you all know how it sounds when finished!!
