Sunn 200S or 2000S cabinet
« on: January 06, 2007, 04:33:14 pm »
Hi everybody,

I got Sunn -71 Sunn 2000S amp (bought it from ebay appr. one year ago).
I have been using Ampeg classic 4x10 as cabinet, which is ok but I think
this amp sounds best with matching 2x15 cabinet.

My problem is that I´m living in Finland/Europe and finding vintage Sunn -cabinet
in Finland or even elsewhere Europe is practically impossible.

So, I have been thinking of making a replica of 2000s or 200s cabinet.

Would anybody know where could I find drawings with measurements?
I understand folded horn design is essential in these cabinets and I would like to get it in right place.

Any advise/hint would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Regards:

Jori

I'd suggest to build the 2000S cabinet since that will match up properly with your amp. The width of the cabinet is the same as that of the 2000S head, but the cabinet is a bit deeper from front to back. It is basically a scaled up version of the 200S cabinet. There are sales brochures here in the museum that show dimensions I believe, and there are pics around also.

Actually, I took a look and here are the cabinet dimensions:

Amp: 10 inches high, 30 inches wide, 9 1/2 inches deep.

Speaker enclosure: 48 inches high, 30 inches wide, 15 inches deep. Casters included for easy transport.
rear-loaded, folding horn design with two JBL D140F's (which are very important to the sound BTW).

I've got some pictures myself here of the cabinets that I could email to you if that helps you, and I'm also a personal friend of Conrad Sundholm, the founder of the company, if you need to know anything about the cabinets that you can't find out otherwise.

This is for the 200s cab:

"The cabinet's external dimensions are 24" wide, 36" tall and 15" deep. A 1/2" plywood liner
was placed on the inside front edge of the cabinet to make it
look "beefy". The port in the 2 X 15" cabinet was 5" high and ran the entire width of
the cabinet. The horn baffle was formed out of two pieces of 1/2"
plywood. The horizontal piece being about 3 to 3-1/2" in depth and the 45 degree angle piece
being 9" long. On the dual 15" cabinet there were two baffle
assemblies. The 1/2" plywood horn baffle pieces were glued into routed grooves in the sides of
the cabinet. The single 15" was simply 1/2 of the dual 15"
cabinet with the port at the bottom of the cabinet with a single horn baffle assembly."

here are all the pictures you need

Hi,

and many thanks for your advise and pictures.
I think I will go for 2000S cabinet as it was designed to go with this head.

From Diagnol´s message I had quite a good idea about the location
and shape of folding horn.

I´d appreciate if you, Greg could mail me few photo´s of 2000S cabinet.

Just one more question regarding loudspeakers.
I have noticed that there are 16ohm JBL D140F´s and 8ohm JBL D140F´s.
But I think 8ohms are right one´s for this kind of project?

And many thanks for you help once more!

Regards:

Jori

I'd be glad to email you some 2000S cabinet pics. What address do I sent them to JoriN?

The speaker impedance you need depends on what load you plan to run on the amp. The output transformer has a 4 ohm tap, an 8 ohm tap, and a 16 ohm tap, although not all of them are on the back of the amp. You can mix and match however you need to get the right tap on the back of the amp for whatever cabinet load you plan to run, but you would probably want to change the extension speaker jack to a normal output jack and run multiple cabinets with a different load by connecting the cabinets in parallel or series. I'd suggest when you build your cabinet to use a jack plate on the back that has two holes in it for jacks like the ones Marshall uses on their 4x12's, so you can wire them in parallel with each other and run your cabinet in parallel or series with another one.
