SUNN 2 X 15 Cab: Cat Box? Grrrrr!!!
« on: March 13, 2007, 11:02:20 am »
Can anybody tell what model cab this is?  Is this for the 2000S ?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=270099088752&rd=1&rd=1

I have two JBL D140F  speakers that would have a great home in this cab, but it's in Illinois and I'm in New Jersey and the seller has it for Pick-up / local delivery only.

There's a board missing? Where's the divider?

I don't know where the auction will go, but I looked into pick-up, pack & ship charges and by the time you add them in and mess with the missing board, I guess this is one to pass on.  The old Sunn cabs seem to pop up so seldom, and when they do people don't want to ship them.  I'm getting discouraged and beginning to think that maybe I should just build myself  the second 200S cab or a pair of 2000S cabs.

Yeah, it looks pretty rough, and the cat comment is a bit much.

I've been looking for a previous generation 215S cab to match my Sorado cab (bought new in '71) for ages but no luck yet.  I'm about two hours drive from this one, contemplating getting two 16 ohm Vegas to pop in it, but not sure I want to go to all that trouble.  Dang.

Damn. I wrote a great reply, and it didn't post!

Anyway, the 215S is the first cabinet with that name. prior to that, cabs were called according to which head they came with. There were, IIRC, three basic models: The big "folded horn" that came with the 1000S and 2000S, the smaller one that came with the 200S, and a smaller one that came with the Spectrum II and Sentura II.

Which one did you have in mind?

Isn't this a 215B ? It has the port down the side instead of between the speakers
like the 200S.

No. The 215S had the port down the side. The 215M was the same cabinet with Magna speakers.

IIRC, the 215B came out with the Beta amps, and had a white baffle board.

All the Beta series cabs (and combos for that matter) that I have seen pictures of have the white baffle board like Issac said... and I trolled eBay for two years bidding on Betas!

I would really like to match my 2000S with the cabs it originally was sold with, but I already have one of the 200S cabs coming (it was supposed to ship yesterday finally; that story is on another thread).  At this point I guess I would go for either type cab.  I wouldn't mind a matched pair of 200S cab while I continue to look for the 2000S cabs.

Also,  I just bought a SUNN/Fender 1200S  amp, so I need a set of cabs that I can load with speakers that will handle more power then the JBL's
will and I think the 200S cabs are better suited for that because of their depth (not as limited as to what type speaker could be put in them?)

So, in the end I guess I will look until I have a pair of each.

Be careful with the 200S cabs, not all drivers fit. The tight fit of the angled porting in the smaller, rear loaded 200S enclosure will want to occupy the same space as the magnet structure of some of the beefier 15's and they won't bolt in.
Unless you start hacking away at the porting, which I think is a bad idea. There was a 200S I saw pictures of on eBay (I think), that had carefully carved semicircles missing from the port ducting, no doubt to fit bigger drivers inside. It probably would have little or no effect on the cabinet response, but it seems kind of sacrilegious to intentionally carve up a 40 yr old classic piece.
There's lots more room to work with in a 2000S cab.

Thanks for the reminder Ed.  Yeah, I remember that cab on E-Bay, the one that was carved up.   Since I posted last, I've been thinking that I will just worry about the matching cabs for the 2000S and approach cabs for the 1200S differently.  For the 1200S I think I will need to put together smaller cabs that won't kill me to haul around.

But if I don't,  even if I have to be careful as far as speaker selection for 200S  cabs,  doesn't the depth of the 2000S cabs restrict that even more?  To something like  7-1/4"  max. over-all-length for the speaker? or even less then that?
