Sunn 1200S
« on: April 01, 2007, 01:17:22 pm »
Hello all,

I am a guitarist in a doom band from CT and recently I bought a Sunn 1200s. Mint condition 70's model, not sure of exact year.  This thing is sweet, it has the original Tung-Sol and Magnavox A6550 tubes. The only thing is, I cant tell if it is a bass head or guitar head. The thing sounds sweet as hell with a real good fuzz pedal. the only literature i can find is for the rack mounted 1200s Bass head.  Does anyone know anything about this head?

Thanks

Looks like it was designed for guitar, but as long as you're playing it through adequate speakers I bet it would make a killer bass amp.

I've used the 70's 1200s for both guitar and bass and it's worked out great.  I believe that the 1200s was the Guitar version since it had trem and reverb and the 2000s was the bass version without those.

Have your tech, or do it yourself, replace the power caps. It'll save you blowing the power transformer since the thing probably hasn't had a workout like your giving it for a while. From everything I have read, 1000 hours is about the limit for electrolytic caps. Not to mention the thing is 30 plus years old anyhow.

Probably would. I've used the similar 60 watt amps, both a Sceptre and Sentura II as bass amps, and have always liked them.
