Sonaro Tube Line Up
« on: April 04, 2007, 02:17:02 pm »
Help!

I got a 69 sonaro that came to me with the tubes out. The sticker for
the tube line up was missing so I searched this forum but couldn't find the line up information.

Is there a picture or a drawing of the chassis that shows the location of the parts and pieces? or from left to right which tube goes where?

TIA

Mark

rectifier(GZ 34, 5AR4, or 5U4) is right in front(looking from the back) of the power transformer.  KT88's or 6550's are your power tubes(2 big sockets in the midle) 6AN8 is the phase inverter(Ithink) little socket in the middle, and 12AX7 or variant is the preamp tube behind the output transformer looking from the back.  I know this because mine (200s - same as sonaro) is in pieces right now waiting for a new power transformer, just got my tubes though, getting closer!

Hi there, I've got 2 Sonaro's and they both have 6ca7's ( el34's ) for outputs. Maybe your's was modded ? Look for a schematic. Mel.

Thanks, In 69 they went from EL34 to 6550 with a bigger transformer. To me, that's exactly like a 200s or a sorado. With the only difference being the speaker arrangement. ( Sonaro having a 1X15) and the sorado and 200s being 2X15.

Some one..... please, educate me on more of the differences, if I am wrong.

I don't know if the tone stack is different. Mine definately has the bigger transformer and 2 6550

Oliver's right.
The '69 Sonaro was an EL34 amp with a 7199 phase inverter rated at 40 watts, with a 1X15 "Sunn Transducer" cabinet.
The '69 Sorado was a 6550 amp with a 6AN8 rated at 60 watts, with a 2X15 "Sunn Transducer" cabinet.
The '69 200S was the same amplifier as the Sorado, but with a 2X15 D140F cabinet.

The '69 Sonic I-40 was changed from EL34's (which would explain the "40") to the same 60 watt 6550 amp circuit as the 200s and the Sorado; it came with a 1X15 loaded with a D140F, and I want one.

So now we know what to get Ed for his Birthday!

in later years was the sonaro outfitted with 6550's/KT88's?

Just to add my two cents, I have seen a Sonaro on craigslist that was 2x6550, same chassis layout and controls as my Sorado. The seller told me by email that this version never made it into a catalog, so I'm not really sure when it was manufactured...

Somebody here probably knows for sure, but I don't. The switch to all 6550 amps sure seemed to be the direction Sunn was going before the Hartzell buyout, but you have to wonder how many different 2 X 6550 bass amps they needed in their lineup! The 1969 lineup pretty much covers all the amp/speaker combination Basses;

I've never seen an actual Sonaro amp, a schematic, or any literature showing anything other than EL34's though.
