SUNN 300T Question:
« on: July 17, 2007, 05:05:38 am »
Any thoughts on using one of these for guitar?  I have been using a 68 SUNN 1200S with 2 marshall 4X12's (75 watt speakers).  last night I picked up a SUNN 300T bass head. I know it is real powerful. But I just got one and am debating using it for guitar.  Thoughts?

It really depends on what your tone preferences are.  If you already have it, I'd say just set aside an evening and mess with it - swap in and out all your pedals, try different EQ settings on everything, maybe even borrow another cab from a buddy or band mate.  It could sound amazing to me and like junk to you - "good" tone with instruments like bass and guitar is always very personal.

Sorry, I should have been more specific.  I am positive it will sound great, I have a ton of cabs and a ton of fuzz pedals to run with it. But I was looking to see if using a bass head for guitar, though guitar cabs could be bad for the cabs themselves. I'd hate to blow my cabs up!

You should be OK. Your 300T is about twice the horsepower of your 1200S, but running a guitar through it shouldn't toast those Marshall cabs. Using it for bass may be a different story though, although that might be OK too. I don't know what it will sound like if you drive it into saturation, probably a little coarser than most guitar amps.
Where on earth do you need to be that LOUD? You could probably do some significant (and permanent) ear drum damage with a 300 watt guitar rig.

Thanks for the info. Thats kind of what I was hoping to hear.  I'm dropping it off to the shop today to get re-tubed and have a once over.  We do tend to play a bit too loud live, but what good is doom if you dont feel yer bones rattle?
