200S, Total absent of bass tone.
« on: September 23, 2007, 11:57:38 pm »
Hello, Early this year I bought a 200s off ebay. Regrettably the seller did a bad job packing it up and the power transformer broke loose enough to disconnect the wires running inside the transformer. Took it to a local shop who addressed the connections along with replacing the capacitors.

Here's the problem. It has absolutely no bass tones!!!

It has downright scary volume compared to two other 200s that I have owned.
The tone is extremely loud, thin and absent of anything except highs. The bass knob seems to only boost the volume further with no tonal change. The bass boost has no effect.  I'm taking it back to the tech here to see if he will have any luck locating the tone issues. Any advice I can pass along would be very helpful.

If you were within easy driving distance, I might be able to help. Otherwise, no idea.

The bass boost has no effect.

This sounds (pun intended) like there is a disconnect in the circuit.

The bass boost bypasses a cap around a resistor to the volume control. If this has no effect, then something around this circuitry isn't making a connection with the volume control. Without this connection, the bass will sound thin as only a (I think IIRC) a .002 cap is in the path.

Probably nothing more than a bad solder joint, or the switch is fubar.

I thing Joe is onto something. Like my Dad always said, look for the obvious. A loose wire is most likely the problem.
