69 200s -- way too much?
« on: October 19, 2007, 11:09:51 am »
http://toronto.craigslist.org/msg/453252721.html

The guy is selling for $750, when I've never seen one go for more than $500USD.

I offered $400-450, as it's missing the back, but if anyone is looking to get this, and is in Southern Ontario, give'r.

I wish they were worth $750, in US or Canadian dollars. It has replacement chicken head knobs too.

Hi,

payed 600 USD for a Sorado plus pp to Germany!  The 200S is quite often on ebay.com for 400...500 USD (as U know). I would wait if the addiction is not too strong! :-D

Greetings

Yeah, I was put off by that, and he had insisted that everything was pretty much vintage.

Oh well, I feel pretty sorry for anyone daft enough to dish out that much cash!

I had a contact with a guy who wanted to sell his 2000s for 1400$. I was not into the scene, so I thougt this would be a "normal price". Plus pp and duty it would have been app. 1800...2000$ :-o. I found this  discussion page and some members told me not to do the deal. They were 100% right.

Hey, big thanks to edbass for the sorado hint (again) - it was a good deal and is a great amp! :-D

This guy is a friend of mine and I'm pretty sure I'm getting the amp from him. He's going to find an amp worth $700ish in Toronto, then I'm going to buy it and trade him it for the 200s and a 2x15 he built. I think it's a fair deal, I saw one go on ebay last week for $500ish and I could use a 2x15.

PS. Canadian dollar > US dollar right now.

Umm... In his ad post, I guess he forgot to mention that the 2 X 15 came with it. Still, even with a homemade 2 X 15 cab $750 is high, unless the cab comes with some premium cast frame drivers.

PS. Canadian dollar > US dollar right now.

Actually I was taking that into consideration. At 750 CAD, it puts that two KT88/6550 Sunn 200S closer in line with the going rate for 4 X KT88/6550 Sunns for us US buyers. In other words, 750 CAD should buy you a 2000S, not a 200S on eBay.
I watch exchange rates pretty close, and when an anomaly like that happens I think you should capitalize by buying all the non depreciating American vintage stuff you can afford to speculate on. Not just music gear, old cars are probably even better, repressed US real estate even better still. Assuming items that will generally appreciate over the long haul (old tube gear, classic cars, REAL ESTATE), right now you northern neighbors can get a 10-12% "leg up" on long term tangible goods investments when the exchange rates fall back into line. And they will fall back in line. Even if they go back to the 1:1 exchange rate, any cash rich Canadians can benefit.
Here’s the rub; the US musical gear marketplace is exponentially larger than the Canadian marketplace. Good news if you are Canadian and sitting on a pile of cash, overall decidedly BAD news if you are Canadian and trying to sell gear in the North American market.

Or, maybe I'm wrong...

Nice, other Sunn fans from Toronto! Anyhow, I just don't think it's worth it without the original knobs, and the missing back piece. However, if you're getting the amp with the 2x15, I could see that being worth it.
