Blown transformer
« on: January 06, 2008, 12:24:53 pm »
I have a Sunn Coliseum 880 with a blown transformer. Is there anything I can do to fix it, or is it a lost cause? Any help would be appreciated.

  Hi there,unless you have some experiance re-winding motors or transformers,I'd say you should pass on repairing it yourself.Look for another head,(blown up,or in worse shape than the 880),for a similar trans.I think the one in the Collisum lead and bass is the same as the 880,(correct me if I'm wrong).Or try a reputable motor re-wind shop,they might be of some help.There are some shops that specialize in vintage transformer re-winds,hope this helps,good luck Mel.

Does anyone have a link to a sight that may provide refurb transformers or for a company that makes new ones for older solid state Sunn heads?

Thanks

Triode pretty much only has what they show on the sight. if you need Dynaco based Sunn parts (except Mk VI/2000S Output trannies :-(), give them a call.
For that Coliseum, this may be a better bet;

Mercury Vintage will restore/repair anything you need.

Hey EdBass thanks for the link.  Mercury does not carry the PT for the 880, but they will unwind the old one, re-wind and upgrage the one that I have.  They were quick to resond and very helpful.  They will charge me $200 for the PT.  I'll report back when the work is done and let eveyone know how it turns out.
