Need help with Sunn Dymos Project! Ohmage etc.
« on: May 18, 2008, 05:03:12 pm »
First post!

Recently bought an old Sunn Dymos 212 in rough condition, I'm going to make it my project to fix it up. It needs new speakers
but I don't know the ohmage of the amp. I can't seem to find any info on this amp online. There is markings inside the head with a signature of 1970.

If anyone knows, or could help me find out I would be most appreciative! I was thinking of getting Jensen Mod series speakers for it. if anyone has any reccomendations (don't have a ton of cash or I would get Celestion Vintage 30's) i'm more than open. I wish I could find the original grill cloth for it.

This is my second Sunn Amp, I have a Concert Lead head and at 200 watts- it kills.

thanks!

Many of the trasistor Sunns were designed for 4 ohms. I would think you would be fine using this.

I am not a fan of the Jensens. Didn't like them in the 60's and 70's and have the same opinion now. I have reconed 2 of them and was not impressed with the quality both of the design and of the sound. Many good speakers out there on Ebay for reasonable prices. Perhaps a pair of Celestion Modern 70? They seem to go for around $30.00 each, many times a bit under. I have seen alnico magnet 12"s in the $20 to $30 range and many ceramic ones as well. Even some Sunn labeled ones. Don't scrimp on the speakers, better to wait a couple of weeks and gather your funds than to purchase something that you are settling for. Also remember that many 12's need some time to sound good. A new speaker can sometimes take 20 to 39 ours to loosen up and reach it's full sound potential. Especially if they have paper surrounds.

Keep us posted.

thanks for your advice basiklybass, i brought the schematics to an amp tech and it's rated at 8 ohms. My roomate has those jensens and i quite liked them, although I do have a Traynor 412 with Celestion Modern Leads which are great!

The guy who built my amp wrote his initials and the date inside the head in wax pencil 4/21/70! Sunn still kicking ass 38 years later.

I'll keep you posted and put up some pictures whenever it's finished (about a week or so). thanks again!
