« on: August 12, 2008, 01:00:42 am »
Boght an old Sunn 4x12 cabinet as you may know. I dont know the model, but it has the 612G , I believe IIRC, transducers.I dont know the exact model of the cabinet.
There are two input jacks on the back. Ive heard theses cabs are wired up funny.
Whats the two input jacks do? thanks

Unless someone has messed with it, it shouldn't be "wired up funny". The two jacks are (or were originally) wired in parallel, so that you can daisy chain them from an amp with a single output jack. One cord from amp to speaker, second cord from first speaker to second speaker.

THank you. The guy I bought it from said the cabinet is four ohm. Would that mean he rewired it?
Looks like stock wiring. Or would the other plug also go into another 4 ohm cabinet makeing the amp see 8 ohms?

my Sunn 412L says 8 Ohm on the back w/ those two jacks.
i have heard to never try to daisy chain spkrs-only amps.
i like the clarity of one amp-one cab.
the guitar guy i roadie for believes in one amp-one SPKR.
he uses 4 amps w/ 2X15 cabs-each spkr goes to one amp.
its a beautiful sound fwiw.

Might depend on how old it is. IIRC, the 1970's 412S was a 4 ohm cabinet, the idea being that two of them would get the maximum power out of the brand new Coliseum series amps.

Two 4 ohm cabinets in parallel would be a  2 ohm load, wouldn't it ?
.  Be careful what amp you "daisy chain" speakers to.

Yes, two 4 ohm cabinets in parallel is 2 ohms. That was perfect for the Coliseum amps, and the Model T had a 2 ohm output as well, but most amps can't handle an impedance that low.

I think the biggest potantial problem is that inexperienced people see a cord going from the amp to one speaker, and from that speaker to another, and think that means it's in series. In almost every instance, that is not the case, and usually, when it is, the jack is labeled "Series out" or the like. Unless you know ofr usre, it's usually safest to assume that a second jack on the back of a cabinet is a parallel connection.
