Thought this might be a good place to jump into the forum. I've been a proud Sunn owner since April '71, & made it my business to keep up with Sunn history ever since. When I bought my Sorado new (or, more precisely, my dad bought it for me ), it was a choice between that & the Sonaro; at that time Sonaro/Sorado were the same head, with 2-6550's rated @ 60w RMS, the difference was the Sonaro came with 2 115 cabs (dim. 24w x 24h x 9d ea.), my Sorado had 1 2-15 cab (dim. 24w x 42h x 15d). The schematic I have says it's for SONIC II, 200s, SORADO & SONIC 1-40. A year or two after my purchase, Sunn re-labeled them 190B for their mix & match system, & the power ratings were miraculously raised to 80w RMS! I read up about tubes from a link from tubesandmore.com & learned there that the higher rating was probably due to 6550-C's, rated 40w apiece.

Sledgeguitar, your rig looks to be the 412 cab from the Coliseum Lead set, which means it should handle way more than what the Sonaro head can ever dish out. Impressive stack you got there.

it WAS nice. i just sold it. i am using the $ to buy a Sunn Model T Reissue(full stack) from the 90's in mint condition. i am not much of a vintage guy but i lOve Sunn amps.

The 190B got a solid state rec. instead of the GZ34 wich adds app. 5...10%. Though it's interesting, the " switch over " to the diodes came not with the name. There are f.e. 2000S Amps with diodes as well as with the tube reciver, though the "update" of the 2000S (350B=150W RMS) came only with the diodes. EdBass mentioned somewehre the the "switch over" to diodes came in 1970.

You are on top of it Oliver! The SS rectifier is where the additional power comes from. Max dissipation is a not the end all, be all of output power, the circuit has a lot to do with it. Reeves Amplification's Custom 225 was just extensively lab tested by Bass Gear Magazine (www.bassgearmag.com) and put out 256 watts from a quad of JJ KT88's in push pull. If you go by plate dissipation, that amp should max out at 160-170 watts.
As with most things, an amplifier's output is a sum of the parts, the whole package working together.
I've attached the Bass Player Magazine review of the Reeves, but they don't dissect and bench test gear like Bass Gear Magazine does; very interesting reading for gear geeks!

Hi,

225W from 4 KT88! WOW! From what I knew from the tube sheeds the max. output of two KT-88 should be (pull push - dependeing on circut, manufactor etc etc. ) app. 50...75W @ 8 Ohm. Really interesting!
Though my knolege on tubes is a bit rotten (I made my electronics education back in 1989 - using mainly solid state divices these days). I really do have to clean it up!

These Reeves amps are really interesting since I like the HIWATT Sound - especially for recording - it's the typical british sound, very clean but warm.
