Model 2 - speaker?
« on: January 02, 2009, 08:15:52 am »
For how does this message board exist? What a paradisiac place like this, I think there is nothing like it. Nevermind.

Some years ago, I scored a Model 2 cab really cheap an fell in love. In lack of a good Sunn amp offer, I play through a Sound City 120. Unfortunately I "accidentally" blew the speakers (120watts vs 50watts....). Is there any chance to find an equally sounding replacement speaker. Or may even get an original pair? Somewhere I read they were bulk Eminence?

Looking forward for hints! Thanks in advance!

Flo.

Welcome to the forum. Why not just have yours reconed/rebuilt?  I always go that route with original speakers.  After all, they were designed for the specific cab they're in, or vice versa.  Just make sure you use a competent speaker shop.  As far as replacements - there is a formula where you do measurements etc. to get a proper speaker - problem is, I don't remember where it's located.  Maybe someone on here will, or probably one of the speaker manfacturers will have it and will help you determine what's best for your cab, should you go that route. Good luck.   8-)

@bigobassman, Thank you for the welcome. I think I will look for someone to have a look at the speakers, a friend of mine already told me that the wiring is okay so far.

@stanner, thank you too. I am located in Germany. Will be lucky to find anybody at all around here who can repair speakers I guess.

Could someone tell me anything about the original speakers themselfes? Besides the 16ohms, 50watts there seems to be no additional information available like the manufacturer, model...

Regards, Florian

Look for any numbers stamped on the back of the speakers. The Sunn Part number is 81-0300-00-90. The same speaker used in Model 4, Concert Monitor and two used in 410SR. Each speaker is 8 ohms. 67-xxxx is an Eminence code, 137-xxxx is a CTS code, xxxx is a date code, Year an Week of manufacture. Other than finding an old Sunn cabinet to take speakers out of, your chances of find an exact replacement are zero.

Thank you mister!

The stamped number on the speakers back is 0800 08 985 and 0300 08 985 and a red 381 on one of them. Any idea about that? Could you recommend a replacement speaker from the modern market that has the same aural features or is close to the original?

Sorry for the pile of questions. I am kind of desperate and short on budget atm. so I want to find the best solution for my problem. Thank you so much for helping out!

Hey Florian - I'm no Sunn speaker expert, so the numbers you showed are I'm guessing maybe Sunn model numbers.  I've never seen those sequences of numbers for manfacturer/date numbers.  Are you sure there are no other numbers?  Sometimes they are on parts of the frame on ribs, outer ring etc.  Also can be worn down and not real visible.   8-)

When taking the photos, I found a number on the membrane, 82 81 13 - guess that means year 81, week 13?

In return for the help, listen to some tracks I have recorded with this cab on my humble myspace. Maybe you enjoy them.

The  82 81 13 is not a code number combination that I'm familular with.  I'm going to check on a speaker that I picked up today and I'll see about other combos.

Liked the tracks on your myspace.  Thanks for sharing.   8-)

PS I just finished looking at the speaker info - the only thing I found that matched any of your numbers is the 381.  That manufacturer shown is Bourns Networks ???  I don't anything about them or even if that number is the mfg number.  As stated earlier, the sequence is normally the mfg. code along with year and week all together.  I know this just clouds things up, but this is what I found.

I went to my trusted guitar service store this week and spoke about my case. I could have my speakers repaired/reconed, there is exactly one person who does it. Unfortunately, they charge around 120€ per speaker which is more than a new Eminence, that can take more wattage afterwards. I think that will be my way to go and save the money for reconing. One 2x10" is too less anyways.

Oh and while chatting, it became probable that the speakers are either UTAH or EMINENCE. The 381 is not the the manufacturer, the 82 81 13 seemes to be a blurry 32 31...which points at UTAH. Didn't find pictures of them though.

Thank you very much for the help everyone! If you ever learn something about my case, i hope you remember this thread and let me know

Thumbs Up! Flo

I must beg to differ with BBM...in the case of a cabinet like the Sunn Model 2 I do not think Sunn designed a speaker to the cabinet. More likely they used a general speaker for several cabinets especially in the later years when bean counters were looking for money saving places. While it is possible to have a speaker made that will do exactingly what you ask, the cost for testing and verification of performance is high. Easier to say: "What have you got that has a Fs of X and can handle X watts? and how much for 20000 of them" Very few musical instrument cabinets have been designed to exacting standards...most are made to fit a head or match a size. Some even come to folks in dreams........... IMHO
