blown speakers...
« on: January 04, 2009, 12:36:59 pm »
So are they useless? I have a 4x12LH & the 2 bottom speakers don't work. The cones look great but no sound comes out. Is that a problem with the voice coil? If so are they history? I'm getting 2 replacements anyway but it would be nice if I can eventually replace them with the originals.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi there,no sound probably means an open voice coil,or maybe a lead in wire to the voice coil. It'll have to be reconed, don't know if it's worth it,you'll need a generic kit, doubt you'll get an orig.Good luck,Mel.

Unless the frame is bent, most all vintage speakers can be reconed. No, you cannot get original parts but many suppliers are making great copies of original cones, spiders and voice coils. Several folks have told me that they cannot hear any difference between the old ones and the recones I delivered. Kind of strange since just the fact that the paper surrounds are tighter should change the sound...but if that is what they hear...who am I to tell them they are wrong?

If the pair is series wired, you probably only have one open voice coil.
