Sunn 200s for metal?

I've heard guitarists and bassists rave about these heads, but what about for metal?

sunn amps do metal , but the bottom end is looser than a ss randall, so if your chunkin around and you want tight stops and machine guns gallops and extreme crunch that sound tight and focused, then sunns arn't for you, but if you want a sick oldschool hella great tone thats super pedal friendly and is unique unto itself, buy a sunn, its got  snarling in your face attack and it cuts threw any mix if you have the right setup, everyone will hear your playing for better or worse, i have grown up on the melvins and i can't get enuff of my sunn amps, they encompass the tone i want. i play many variations of metal, sunn rules.

There is really very little comparison between a 200S and a SS amp tonally, even a Sunn SS amp. It's apples and oranges.
A healthy 200S does take pedals well though.

concert lead sunn solid state, whips alot of ass.
It takes the pepsi challenge and still walks away with respect.
i agree totally edbass, i love tubes, no comparison.
occaisionally i hear an ss i can't get over.
L-5 lab series is another neat ss amp, crystal clear, alot of output.
And why are so many bass amps SS these days,?
i'm a guitarist first and foremost.
but i like bass through a tube amp ALOT!
But its like attack of the ss bass heads in every chain store in america.

Thanks guys, I have seen alot of Sludge bands use them, I know they have big tone and low bottom end, but I do want something that'll stop on a dime. Are they any Sunn amps that do that? I'm new to Sunn's I would get a 200s regardless but I'd like to know what I can get out of the model.

Extreme crunch, tight and focused. Sounds like a job for transistors to me. What are "tight stops and machine gun gallops"?

"Stop on a dime", is that similar to "tight stops and machine gun gallops"? Are you guys playing these amps or racing them?

My beta lead is loud as hell w/ lots of bottom end and if I want a tighter, more compressed  sound for leads and more gain I just stick a pedal in front of it. I found a Turbo Rat attenuated the bass too much, I ended up going with an ehx metal muff. Play around with the right pedal and you can get your machine gun gallows and screamin' harmonics, especially if you've got decent pick-ups.

OK, really, what are machine gun gallows/gallops? Can someone point me at an example? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm genuinely curious.

Haha, older Metallica and Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Demericous, Mastodon. Check out those bands, think of the main riff from Heart's "Barracuda", but the speed picked up like 100-125 bpm.

I've recently been informed that my Sonic II is identical to the 200s and I also play guitar. Mine has been retrofitted w/ a solid state rectifier and that does tighten things up a bit, but, if you have this amp and want a really hard sound, just plug a Boss OS-2 into it and adjust the amp to get a compromise in tone for when the effect is on or off. If you want some really thick, sludgy, doomy vibe...put the Boss into a germanium Fuzz Face-type.

I've found that nothing will cure a really bad pedal, but (in my experience) this amp takes to even average-sounding pedals. The Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal can give you cheesy 80's Metal to more of the thrash thing with really scooped mids and be bought used for cheap. That's one fun thing about this amp (and many mid to higher wattage tube amps)....if the clean sound is there, you can experiment with pedals until you find "your" sound".

I would say just cut out the chugga-chugg-chugg entirely and use that 200S for some crushing doom metal. Not stoner metal. Bleak, crushing, misanthropic drone/doom hatred..


If you really must do the chugging, I would recommend the beta series - Particularly the beta bass has a very tight punchy tone that's good for old thrash.
