Sunn Coliseum 300 question
« on: February 20, 2009, 08:57:33 pm »
I have recently purchased a Sunn Coliseum 300 head, and was wondering what kind of cabs would be the best to go with this.  I am playing guitar through this.  I want to be able to crank this with out it sounding crappy.  Any suggestions.  I have been trying to find sunn cabs, but no luck.  It puts out 300 watts at 2 ohms, what would be the best way to get the most power out of this amp?  Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same head, but use it for bass guitar, either using the 2-15 300 watt Sunn cab or the 1-18 300 watt folded horn cab.  They both work great.  However, for guitar, I wouldn't think that the 18" folded horn cab would do to good.  A 2-15 cab would probably work or possibly a 4-12 or 4-10.  The only way to get the most power out of this amp is to get your cab or cabs ohms to 2 to match the ohms of the head.  Higher ohm cabs will work, but there will be a significant drop in produced power from the head.  Good luck.   8-)

Best? I'd say three 610S or 612S cabinets! When they were new, I think most guys playing guitar through them used two 412S cabinets. As bigobassman said, to get the most power you'd want a total 4 ohm load. However, I do not agree that you'd notice a big difference running a 4 ohm load instead, and the amp might be happier in the long term.
