SUNN 350B Bass HEAD.......How much is it worth?
« on: May 13, 2009, 10:03:16 pm »
I am the proud original owner of a Sunn 350B Bass head bought from Manny's Music in 1973 on 48th street in NYC. I'm not a bassist. I'm a keyboard player. I was in  a band whose guitarist had a Marshall stack. My Hammond seemed to cut through fine, but the Fender Rhodes Piano was always drowned out coming through my Showman head. What to do? Buy a powerful bass head! I was never drowned out again, and the balance of the band was much improved.

I've kept the amp all these years (still have the owners manual) & recently had it serviced (power cord was frayed) & cleaned by a professional amp tech. Still the original tubes! The tech said, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Sounds as loud & great as the first day I got it. I've used it through a 2 X 15" cab for bass in my home studio.

Recently became an unemployment statistic, have a little cushion to get our family through for a while, but I might have to raise cash in the near future so........what do you think this head's worth?  Thanks for your opinions.

It's worth exactly whatever somebody is willing to pay. About the only actual barometer of current used gear value is completed eBay auctions, and probably because of situations such as your own, the market for the big (four output tube 1000 series, 2000S, 350L, 350B type) Sunn tube amps like yours has been tanking as of late.
Not long ago an amp like yours would bring $1000+, but here's what I've seen lately;
2000S - $710 on 4/1
2000S - $685 on 4/12
Coliseum PA - $472.03 on 5/13
It's certainly a buyers market, but if you can hang on I'm pretty sure the market will once again spike upwards.
After all, they are fantastic amps, comparable new "boutique" hand wired amps still bring stupid money, and they sure aren't making any new 350B's, 2000S's, etc. any more.
Good Luck!

Hi,

I payed 850$ for my 350B two years ago. Though it gets 7 of 10 Points because the tolex is ripped, but the sound is 10/10! Great amp!

Sorry for the unemployment, we are got the same problems here, the "car idustry" is really down. Anyway - times will change again! Good luck!

To EDBASS: Where or what is a 4/1. Is it a marketplace?

Greetings

Oliver

Not to put words in anybody's mouth but I guessed that 4/1 and 4/12 are the dates.  Oli is probably used to the german (euro) way of day/month/year.

Regading the price, I'd figure out if you're willing to sell at the current reduced price.  If not you could hang onto it for a while and once things rebound get what you're after.  Like the others have said, its a great amp but timing might be a little bad to sell it now.

cheers

Appologies to my Euro friends, those are indeed dates of completed auctions. Sorry for the confusion!
Hey b3guy, if you have to sell it, take a shot on this forum first and if eBay becomes an option, list the title as "Sunn 350B/2000S" or something else to get "2000S" in the title, and be sure to mention that it's the same amp as a 2000S in your description.
I'm pretty sure more people are familiar with the 2000S designation and that should get you more attention.
