Full Stacking Sorado Question
« on: June 05, 2009, 01:02:27 pm »
I have 2 Marshall JCM800 1960 cabinets rated for 16 ohms each, and a Sunn 212LH rated for 8 ohms. On the back of my Sunn Sorado, there is an 8 ohm output and a 4 ohm output. If I plugged the Marshall cabinets into those output jacks, would that be okay? And is there anyway to run all 3 cabs at once?

Any way you can connect all the cabs in parallel will work as long as the is a plug in the 4 ohm jack on the Sorado. (Edit: You can use the 8 ohm jack in addition but you will still be connected to the 4 ohm transformer tap.) Do any of the cabs have more than one jack on the back? Use that to daisey chain two of the cabs. Otherwise you will need a Y cord. When you plug into the "4 ohm" jack on the Sorado, a mechanism on the jack switches the tap on the output transformer from 8 to 4 ohms. If you have just one 4 ohm cab, use the 4 ohm jack. If you have one 8 ohm cab, use the 8 ohm jack. If you have two 8 ohm cabs, use both jacks (Edit: you will be properly connected to the 4 ohm tap). The two 16 ohm Marshall cabs act like one 8 ohm cab when they are daisey chained.

Edited for clarity.

My Marshall cabs only have one jack, but the Sunn 212LH has two. The Sunn cab is 8 ohms however while the Marshalls are both 16 ohms. So would it be safe to daisey chain the Sunn cab with a Marshall cab?

That would have an impedance of 12 ohms, so no.

Actually that would have an total nominal impedance of of 4 ohms, so yes, it would be fine.

To run all three cabinets at once, you could daisy chain the two Marshall cabs together using a parallel Y cord.  Plug the Y into one of the outputs on the head, and the Sunn cabinet into the other.

This would accomplish exactly the same thing as daisy chaining the three cabs together in parallel.

Any way you can connect all the cabs in parallel will work as long as the is a plug in the 4 ohm jack on the Sorado.

I would amend this absolutely correct statement to read "Any way you can connect all the cabs in parallel will work as long as the whole mess is connected to the 4 ohm tap on the Sorado."
Here's the rub; Each 4X12 Marshall cab will only be receiving 25% of the amp's power, while the 2X12 will be recieving a full 50% share.
Probably not the most efficient use of that group of cabinets IMO, but to each their own!

As Ed points out, my answer was totally wrong, so I removed it to avoid further confusion.  Sorry.

Alright, so I plugged the Sunn cab into the Sorado, and plugged a Marshall cab into the second jack on the Sunn cab. The 2nd Marshall cab is plugged into the 8 ohm jack on the Sorado, while the Sunn cab chained with the other Marshall cab is plugged into the 4 ohm jack. Thank you guys so much for helping me out!

How does it sound? Is there a good balance between the 212 and the Marshall cabs?

Balance wise, it's hard to tell because I'm playing in a fairly small room, but it sounds amazing.
