Small,portable,bass amp?
« on: October 07, 2009, 08:11:21 am »
Was thinking about adding a Sunn back into my arsenal of bass fire power.  Not looking to drag around a 2-15" cabinet or a 60-80lb amp. In the past I've owned many vintage and new Sunn rigs.  Looking for something that could be used for practise/recording and as a stage monitor.  I don't need loud stage volume.  Looking at maybe a Sonaro combo or a Sonic I-40?  Does anybody have experience with these or any other suggestions?

I would recommend the Sonic I-40 with the JBL if you could find one.  Although I have not played through one myself, I know by pairing my Sorado with my 115V I have a great-sounding small rig very similar to the Sonic I-40 setup.

I also have a Studio Bass (with a 15" speaker) but it has a not-so-great 1970s solid-state sound to it.  I only keep it because it was the first piece of Sunn gear I bought as a collector (not as a crazed high school junior like I was when I bought the Sorado) plus I can use it when my acoustic blues band plays outdoors (for some reason it sounds better outdoors than indoors AND it covers up easily with a big trash bag in case of rain).

Yes, finding one that's the problem.  Definitely tube over the solid state.  I was going to buy a Sonic I-40 years ago that I ran across but thought it would not be loud enough.  Such is life.  In the past I've owned Sunn 300T with 2-15" cabinet,74' Model T,69' 2000s,Sceptre with 1-15" cabinet and Solarus combo.  At the present time I don't own any Sunn gear.  Yea shame on me.  Using Aguilar and Ampeg stuff, but sure wish the Sunn would rise again in my life.  Can I join the brotherhood again?

Absolutely.  All prodigal sons welcomed back.

Which Aguilar gear do you use?  I use the DB359 most of the time but have an AG500SC for those times when portability is critical.

I use a AG500 with two 1-12" cabinets.  Covered in the boss tweed tolex(nice eye candy).  70's Ampeg B-15N for practice and smaller/quieter gigs.  I've also owned at one time Mesa Boogie, Hartke, Traynor, Ampeg etc... favor tube amps.

As CLD suggests, any 60 watt Sunn head (40 watt head for an early l-40) with any D140 loaded Sunn 115 cab will do a decent Sonic l-40 impersonation. The amps themselves are identical to all the other Sunn bass models of the same configuration.
I use a Sonic l-40 cab for all kinds of things, but it has limitation; namely the porting (combined with the fact that it's rear loaded) won't allow many drivers to actually fit, and while it sounds sweet, the original single D140 runs out of gas pretty quick compared to newer drivers. I find the 200S/l-40 cab combo has similar SPL limitations as my B15N does in live situation.  I currently have a K140 in my l-40 cab which helps a little, but a 115S cab is more versatile overall IMO.
This is the cab the CLD has, but his is called a “115V” because it came loaded with a Cerwin Vega driver. By the early 70’s the upgrade drivers were no longer JBL. Sunn had three levels in most cabs; “S” models had Sunn Transducers, “M” models had Sunn Magna driver, and “V” models had Cerwin Vega drivers.
I also have a 215S cab that at one time or another I have loaded just about every bass worthy 15” driver that there is. However, when loaded with D140’s it sounds very similar to my 200S cabs with D140’s, so I personally don’t believe there is any sort of “compromise” tonally using the newer front loaded cabinet (115S,M,V 215S,M,V) instead of the traditional l-40 or 200S cabs.

Thanks, I'll keep this info in mind when on my quest.  Locally there is a 200s head for sale at $529.  Looks to be in nice shape.  Haven't played through it.  Is this price fair?  Snag this up then look for a cabinet?  Might be an option.

Just the amp, or does it include the speaker? If just the amp, it's on the high end of what I've seen them go for in recent years, and that was before the current economic state. If it includes the cabinet, it's a steal.

Nope just the amp.  It's an individual that's also willing to do trades with PA equipment, amps, guitars.  So haggle with the price you think?

I agree with Isaac $529 would be on the high end, particularly in these current times. I would personally consider it only if it were ultra minty, strong OEM tubes, etc.; and even then it would be a tough call to actually pull the trigger.
And... I tend to have an optimistic outlook regarding the value of old Sunn's, as I have a vested interest in promoting (inflating?) the value of 200S's in the open market.
Remember, any of the two output tube bass amps are essentially a "Sonic l-40" amp, and even the guitar amps will get the job done sonically, and generally command less money on the used market.
As far as long term however, you would probably be better off with a 200S rather than any of it's clone siblings, as although virtually the same amps, IMO the "200S" has a more wide spread name recognition and therefore a broader potential market.

They won't sell for less that $529.  Here's the link http://harrisburg.craigslist.org/msg/1407672583.html.  He is using ebay as his guide for the asking price.  I think I'll let this one go.

I think that, in the current market, he isn't oging to get that price. Of course, I could be wrong.
