good cab for a sunn model t reissue head
« on: October 10, 2009, 01:31:22 pm »
i'm buying a sunn model t head this weekend. i was wondering what kind of cab would work well with it. i play heavy rock stuff kinda like unwound, hot snakes, sonic youth, ponytail, boris, russian circles. doesn't necessarily have to be a sunn cab, and nothing too, too pricey.

i'm eyeing a sunn 610s cab, but those are 6 ohms and model Ts only have 4, 8 and 16 ohm options right?

You could safely use the 6 ohm cabinet at the 4 ohm setting. It MIGHT even be OK at the 8 ohm at lower volumes only but riskier for sure why bother. A little more load (6) than the setting (4) is OK...common knowledge..... a 8 ohm speaker for example reads 6.?-7 ohms anyway it's not exact. With a Sunn cab you'll get more respect.....  :-D

A lot of people think that, on tube amps, a lower impedance is safer than a higher one. Others say that up to a 100% mismatch should be fine. Either way, I wouldn't worry about running a Model T into a 610S at either the 4 or 8 ohm setting. I once did an entire gig with mine set at 8 ohms, powering two 8 ohm cabinets. No issues whatsoever.

I have a 73 1st Gen Model T running at 4ohms into two 612 cabinets(6ohm each, in parallel = 3ohm), and it's not a problem.

I should *probably* run it at 2ohm, but I think 4ohm is safe, and I'm not detecting anything sketchy happening, so why not? ;)

I'd say run it at 4ohms, but 8ohm is fine as well.

i think i might prefer something with 12s in it, though.

found a pretty good deal on an avatar 4x12. 8 ohms. 100 watts.
